Wingfield Manor

A Beautiful Part of Amber Valley Heritage and of Our Nation's Story

Not long ago I was lucky enough to be given a tour of Wingfield Manor by its current owner, and what a charming and knowledgeable tour guide he was too! These magnificent ruins sit looking over the beautiful countryside of South Wingfield and have more than a few stories to tell.

Built in the 15th Century, the Manor is a striking example of a late medieval mansion. It is even said to have inspired Hampton Court Palace.

Not only is the Manor beautiful, even today, but it boasts a fascinating storied history. It’s most famous resident was undoubtedly Mary, Queen of Scots, who was kept as a prisoner here on two separate occasions. It's believed that the Manor played a part in the infamous Babington Plot.

Over the years it has also been a battleground, during the English Civil War; a strategic munitions store, during World War II; and, it was even home to one of the country’s first flushing toilets.

Sadly, the Manor is currently closed to the public due to its deteriorating condition.

A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity

English Heritage has been responsible for the site’s upkeep, but the costs involved in making it accessible to the public have proved prohibitive. It is now listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register due to its deteriorating condition.

However, the current owner told me that he has decided it is time to move on and sell this historic monument.

I spoke to the trustees of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT) and we agreed that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect the Manor for generations to come and open it back up to the public.

We are calling on members of the public to add their names to a petition, asking the government to recognise the importance of Wingfield Manor and to take steps to ensure it is made once more accessible to the public, and available for everyone to enjoy.
